Invoicing in India: the essentials

Tax
GST
Rates
Principally 5% and 18% after the 2025 rationalisation; most services 18%
Tax identifier
GSTIN — 15 characters, registered per state rather than nationally
Registration
Compulsory above ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services

Worth knowing: Same state means CGST + SGST at half the rate each; different states means a single IGST line. The wrong split blocks your client's input tax credit. Invoice numbers are capped at 16 characters and reset each April.

Invoicing rules in India

India's invoice rules are statutory, not conventional. Get the GSTIN, place of supply or tax split wrong and your client loses their input tax credit — so the invoice comes back.
